Overload and short circuits in one or more branches are reliably detected. The electronics allow short-term current peaks, e.g. due to high inrush current, and switches branches with longer overloads off. This is ensured even on high-impedance lines and in the event of creeping short circuits. The intact branches are supplied, thus minimizing system downtimes. The faulty branch is signaled via LEDs on the device and via a common signaling contact or diagnostic monitor.
